Old vs. New

Old vs. New

Last night, while trying to sleep, my mind wandered to my craft supplies, and I asked myself, “What’s the oldest thing in my stash?”

Have you ever taken the time to think about that? What crafty supply started you on this journey into the realm of creativity and documentation?

What’s your oldest supply?

Mine are these two stamps, and this embossing powder.

old vs new craft supplies

I got them during a show at the local mall while I was still living at home/ between college semesters. To melt the embossing powder, I’d hold the image over a burner on the stove.

In the background you can see my newest craft supply: a piece of handmade paper from Papyrus that I got while in Boston a couple weeks back. I have this vague idea for using it in a craft project. We’ll see if that actually pans out.

So what are your oldest and youngest craft supplies? Do you still use them?

(I use the leaves frequently. I can’t remember the last time I used the Pooh stamp. Maybe it’s time to give it a new home. Or not. I still have small children I can send Valentine’s to!)

Don’t forget to share with us, and let everyone know what your oldest and youngest supplies are. Wouldn’t it be fun to compare the two, to see what’s changed about your crafty life, and what’s remained the same?

Getting Crafty at the Crop at Lain’s

Getting Crafty at the Crop at Lain’s

Last weekend, I spent Saturday at a crop at Lain Ehmann’s. I’ve known Lain for years, and take advantage of any opportunity to visit, since it’s always a fun time.

I’ve been to enough local crops recently, that all my easy, journaling-light projects are all up to date. So what to work on? Granted, there was sure to be lots of chatting going on, but what’s the point of going to a scrapbooking crop if you don’t make SOMETHING, right?

So then the wheels started turning, and I decided that maybe it was time to play with a technique I’ve done before, but this time use a few different materials: image transfers. I’ve done image transfers before, but with self-stick acetate, not multi-medium.

After re-watching Stephanie Hamen’s True Scrap 5 class (affiliate link), I gathered my photos and materials, and packed everything up for the crop.

One of the things I wanted to do was start with a messy background before adding the image transfer over top. The idea I’m going for is a bit messy and multi layered.

This is what I got done on Saturday:

These were done on water color paper that had been misted and painted. The ones below are on some canvases I had painted years ago, and when I didn’t like how they were turning out, shelved for a while.

You can see that some images transferred better than others, and that others are still not completely paper free. But these are off to a promising start. They definitely need a bit more layering and such. Hopefully they’ll turn out interesting enough to share with you!

Do you have any photos that you’d love to turn into art pieces? What are you going to do with them?

Some Days Just Make You Happy

Some Days Just Make You Happy

This. This page. This is why I do LOAD:

Live Laugh Play doodle! || noexcusescrapbooking.com

This page started with the photos. I love these glorious, hovering in mid-air pictures. They aren’t perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but they really capture how much fun the kids were having.

The next piece I decided to work with was the die cut pocket page card from Simple Stories. I love so much of their work. Lots of happy colors in their collections. I decided I wanted to use kraft cardstock as the background, and then discovered I had run out of the 12×12 paper. So then I pulled out some white, but that looked so anemic in comparison to the colorful photos that I pulled out some black instead.

There! That worked. But then I got hung up again on patterned paper. I wanted colorful and happy to go with the happy pictures, but throwing a lot of patterns together just made everything entirely too busy. And I really wanted to use the chevron/multi-color stripe paper, but I also loved the letters and arrows on the back.

Handy dandy paper trimmer to the rescue!

Rather than layering various papers on top of each other, and matting focal photos, I decided to keep it super simple and  cut one three inch strip, which I then cut into 4 inch pieces. Flipping one piece over, so the reverse pattern would show, I put everything into a simple grid arrangement, and walked away for a bit to get a fresh eye.

When I came back, I knew what I needed. Doodles. Lots of doodles. And maybe some enamel dots as well.

Why is doodling so much fun?

It’s definitely a happy page for a happy idea. And something I noticed, after I uploaded, and got a good distance view of the page? Can you see a heart? Let me know if you see it too. Maybe I’m imagining things.

I love how totally unplanned things make everything look like it was completely intentional.

So. Are you making anything you want to share? I’d love to see it!

Still Trucking Along

Still Trucking Along

Wow! I thought this month was going to be all about how you can make scrapbooking a priority in your life, even when life gets hectic. And then I had an unexpected trip to NYC, and everything’s been off for the rest of the month.

You know how, sometimes, you just need to drop every outside influence, and become a turtle? Maybe that’s just me. But that was how my month went. Full on avoidance of anything and everything. I tried to not go into turtle mode this month, but apparently I still haven’t learned that I need to embrace turtle mode, so that it doesn’t last as long as when I try to avoid it.

The result? I’m still in catch up mode, and working on getting to having the same number of layouts done as the number day of the month. I’ve got 15 done, and ideas for one more, ready for me to work on. I’ll get that done today.

I love the feeling of being back on track.

Want to see what I have gotten done?

Yes? Good. Cos I’m going to show you anyway! 😉

First up? Another college page. I used up more scraps from my scrap bin, including an altered piece from a kit from Messtaken Identity.

Then there’s some more pics from the family photo shoot. Don’t you just love that Q?!

One of the prompts for LOAD was black and white, which made me think of Pokemon. I got my son involved in the journaling, and used my Silhouette Portrait to cut out a Pokemon title in a font similar to the official one.

And then, it was time to use more scraps from my scrap bin. I love using a winter photo with July Fourth themed paper for a topic unrelated to either theme.

And then it was time for another college page. There are so many little stories to tell about college life. So many wonderful people to remember.

And finally a page about what I love most about summer. And no, it’s not bathing suits! 😉 The two pocket page cards flip up and down to reveal journaling. This was a fun page to figure out.

So that’s all I’ve gotten done this month, and the end is fast approaching. Am I going to get 28 pages done? Do I even want to?

I don’t know. I just know I am going to keep going though. Every page done is another story told, another thought shared with my family. That is why I do this after all.

What’s inspiring you today?

What’s inspiring you today?

The other day I was feeling out of sorts, if you will. Like I hadn’t made a page in years. Like if I didn’t get inky soon, I was going to implode.

When I have days like that, it means I need to switch gears, and move from the writing side of creativity to the messy side of creativity. Luckily, that day Noell Hyman from Paperclipping started posting her videos from CHA, which included demos from Julie Fei Fan Balzer, Dina Wakley and Dyan Reaveley.

If you’ve never seen any of their work, you really need to. Their art is messy and free and gorgeous. I love their philosophy of more is more, at least when it comes to layering on inks and paints. Every time Julie Fei Fan Balzer says, “But wait, there’s more!” my heart just gets happier and happier.

So, inspired by those lovely ladies, I created this. Three different brands of spray inks. (Dylusions, Mister Huey, and Fireworks). A stencil from Martha Stewart crafts, and a barely visible one from Julie’s Crafter’s Workshop line.  Ranger dauber paints dry brushed on. Some of my favorite stamps. A few distress inks. Faber Castell india ink markers. Lots of alphas. (Thickers, Tim Holtz, Scenic Route, and Making Memories.) And a felt silhouette I got from a scrapbooking kit club years ago.

Do you like it? It really satisfied my need to create.

So what’s inspiring you now? Are you letting your inspiration motivate you to create? Give yourself permission to make something today. The dishes can wait. You need time to make messes too!
