When You Just Can’t Manage

When You Just Can’t Manage

We’re so close to the end of the month, a complete LOAD is totally obtainable. Except I’ve been fighting off the galloping gunk for days now.

I had fun plans based on yesterday’s prompt. Dialogue is one of the most fun things to do on a scrapbook page, as far as I’m concerned. But I needed to find pictures, print them out, then work on the design, which I knew I wanted to be more artsy than most of the pages I’ve been doing this month. The whole idea sounded exhausting.

I tried during the day to do bits and pieces, but it just wasn’t happening. So last night, I took a few pics with my iPhone, and went to bed and did a PL page in bed before passing out.

The Project Life app has kept me in the running this month. Only three more days of LOAD! Who’s excited about finishing? I would be, except for the whole complete exhaustion thing.

Playing Catch-Up

Playing Catch-Up

This week has been weirdly busy, so while I have been able to continue to create pages every day, I haven’t been able to share them on the blog with you.

Let’s do a quick run-down for you:

I tried to make a rhyming poem for this page, but ditched it when nothing but doggerel made it onto the practice paper.

This page was all about playing with fun fonts. And filling in the blanks on the prompt, “Don’t Let the ____, _____,” based on the “Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus” books. (If you haven’t read any Mo Willems books, you need to. He’s the Dr. Seuss of our generation.

Trying to remember books that were read to me as a child for the next prompt, and I can’t remember any of them. However, I vividly remember reading to my little sister “The Monster at the End of This Book,” hence the monster themed paper.

This page came together in half an hour, when I realized at 10:45 that I hadn’t made a page for the day. I used a few photos that I had put aside to document my new iPhone, and lots of scraps from my scrap bin. One of the big benefits of LOAD is how fast I scrap now. There’s a lot less indecision when time is a limiting factor.

And then page creation got a bit hairy. We headed off to my sister’s, which meant I either needed to bring scrapbooking supplies, or find an alternative way to scrapbook if I was going to continue making a page a day. Solution? The Project Life app for iPhone.

Both Monday and Tuesday, I used photos I or my sister had taken to document the events of the day, a few cards from various kits, and the pages were done. And shared on Flickr! I am loving how versatile my iphone is! But that’s a post for anther day.

That brings us up to today. We got home about an hour and a half ago. Next on the to-do list? Listening to today’s prompt.

There are so many ways to scrapbook every day. Pick one and start telling YOUR story. It is definitely worth it.

No Stress Project Life

No Stress Project Life

I have not been doing Project Life on a daily basis. Nor on a weekly basis, or even on a monthly basis.

The thing is, I’m not scrapping all the time. (Shocking, I know!) Sometimes I’m sewing, sometimes I’m making cards, sometimes I’m crocheting. I scrapbook in batches. I find I like how I scrapbook if I do a bunch at a time. Also, I appreciate it more every time I get back to it from some other project. I really do love scrapbooking.

I was trying to write every day when I first started this year’s version of Project Life, but that quickly got away from me. It’s hard to remember to write things down, when it feels like everyday is the same. Wake up, get kids to school, work/write/chores till the kids get home, then nag about homework, make dinner, and chase everyone off to bed.

It sometimes feels like a boring daily slog. But, I am using Project Life to try to remember all the little things that WILL change as the kids grow up.

And that really is what Project Life is to me. A chance to capture details that are going to change, no matter how repetitive they seem now.

During December I found time to catch up on the past two and a half months. Family visits. Birthdays. Exciting announcements.

PL Oct wk4 || noexcusescrapbooking.com
I had chances to get crafty with both kids for Halloween. Even though my oldest didn’t go trick or treating because he didn’t get armor for his birthday. (Seriously. He wanted chain mail!)

PL Oct wk5 || noexcusescrapbooking.com
That’s the thing about Project Life. It can be anything you want it to be, and you can manage it in whatever way works best for you.

PL Nov wk1 || noexcusescrapbooking.com
If you like to print photos on a daily or weekly basis at home, you can. If you like to save up and do big batches all at once, you can.

PL Nov wk2 || noexcusescrapbooking.com
Project Life is flexible. Scrapbooking is flexible. There’s no one, right way to do any of it.

PL Nov wk3 || noexcusescrapbooking.com
Do whatever works best for you. Tell your story. Tell your family’s story.

That’s all that really matters.

Project Life Update (Month 2)

Project Life Update (Month 2)

Over the weekend, I updated our Project Life album.PL Aug 1 || noexcusescrapbooking.com

To adjust for the photo variety, I used an old We R Memory Keepers sticker organizer page on the right, which also required a bit of paper finagling.

I just got a smart phone, so I’ve been playing with the camera a little bit. Not too impressed with the quality so far, but then again, it was a very cheap phone.

While on our first group family vacation ever– my family, my sister’s family, my mother, and my brother’s daughter all in one house for a week!–I managed to sprain my ankle, my mother tripped and fell face first into a patch of poison ivy, and my niece got a gigantic splinter in her foot.  Apparently we wanted to share everything, even injuries!

You might be able to see, on the right, all the journaling cards have the writing sideways. Since I am trying to write every day, I am not worrying about card orientation. That may lead to some awkward pages like this, but I want to make sure I’m capturing stories.

The last few days of vacation, first couple days of school, and then I got struck down by yet another case of strep throat. That’s an important thing to think about when doing long term projects– are you going to try to maintain your tempo when you’re feeling unwell, or are you going to give yourself room to heal and recover? That’s a decision you’ll have to make for yourself, based on what you want to accomplish, and what will most likely help you succeed.

I needed to slow down a bit, so there’s only a handful of cards and pictures for the two weeks I was sick. That’s alright. I’m back on track now!

How do you handle being sick? Do you keep making stuff?

A Month of Project Life Under My Belt.

A Month of Project Life Under My Belt.

Do you know how hard it is to start Project Life while renovating and moving your craft room around? That was an added wrinkle I didn’t factor in when planning to start!

Wait. Did that sound whiny? That wasn’t a complaint, just an observation.

Since the main focus of Project Life, for me, is the story, I didn’t worry about whether I took a photo every day, but I did try to write on a journaling card every day. I was able to do that fairly easily at first, until I had some long, exhausting days that completely drove writing out of my mind.

When I started assembling the words and pictures, I realized I needed some 3×4 photographs as well. You might find yourself needing that too, so here are a couple printing templates for you:

The hardest part for me was deciding on picture and page orientations. Because I wrote everything out before assembling the pages, I had to decide on how to deal with photos that worked better as one orientation, and journaling that didn’t match that orientation in the pocket pages.

Case in point: the very first journaling card I filled out for the last day of school had a horizontal orientation, as did the pics of the kids getting of the bus. Solution? Use one of the rotated pocket page designs, and print the photos out at 3×4 instead of 4×6.

The other issue right at the start was the fact that I couldn’t start with the photos in strict chronological order. This of course was a minor issue, with the solution being to group one day’s photos across the top, and subsequent days along the bottom and right side.

noexcusescrapbooking.com

It works, with photos that tell related stories grouped together.

PL pg 2 || noexcusescrapbooking.com

As I worked on later weeks, the process became easier, and the pages more streamlined.

PL pg 4 || noexcusescrapbooking.com

That’s sort of the point of Project Life, don’t you think? To make it easy to tell stories and share photos?

PL pg 5 || noexcusescrapbooking.com

At any rate, the last few pages were much easier to assemble than the first few.

PL pg 6 || noexcusescrapbooking.com

I don’t know if you noticed or not, but these pages are not in strict week by week order. Some pages cover three days. Some ten. I let the stories I’d recorded and the photos I’d taken dictate the final pages, rather than the other way around.

Anyone else making Project Life pages? What’s your favorite part about it? I’m loving the excuse to write a little something every day. How about you?
