Photography Is Dead

Photography Is Dead

We live in a time when more and more pictures are being taken. People take pictures of the food they eat, the places they visit, and what they’re wearing. They snap adorable photos of their children, and ridiculous selfies as they have fun making faces. People are capturing more photos than ever, because they always have their phones easily available, and the picture quality on camera phones can be amazing.

People tell themselves that the best camera to use, is the one they have on them, and increasingly, that is their cell phone.

More people are sharing these photos too, through social sites like Instagram and Tumblr and Facebook, so more and more people are seeing the pictures that define and illustrate our lives.

It seems like photography has hit a giant upswing in popularity.

However, frequently, that’s where current photography stops.

Photographs are not backed up, and frequently just deleted when our phones run out of space for new photos.

Not only that, but we don’t go back at look at older photos. Once the initial love at first sight photo share is over, we don’t go back to revisit and remind ourselves of the photos we love. Out sight becomes out of mind, and then out of memory.

So, while we’re taking more photos than ever, we’re also doing nothing with them. No printing, no photo albums, and no memory keeping.

Photography is dying, from a surfeit of photos, and a lack of a plan on what to do with the glut of photos we all have.

We can save photography. It’s a simple process. Save the photos you love some place other than your phone. Try dropbox, or carbonite, or an external hard drive. And print! Put pictures up on your wall. Send hardcopies to your family and friends. Scrapbook.

Because while scarcity makes a thing more valuable, I’d rather there were too many photographs in the world, than none.

The photographs you take tell stories about who you are, and the world around you. Your story matters. The world you live in matters.

Save your photographs.

Scrapbook.

Circle Inspiration

Circle Inspiration

While switching craft rooms this summer, I came across a couple old catalogs from The Angel Company. Back in the day, I was a demonstrator with them, before they went out of business. If anyone is interested in a copy of the catalog, leave a comment below. I have two left that I’d gladly give away. While you can no longer get the supplies, it is a great source of inspiration.

On the cover of the catalog there’s a lovely scrapbook page that made fun use of a circle in the design. “Oooh, circles,” I thought, “let’s talk about circles on the blog!”

Little did I realize how rarely I use circles when I make pages.

In looking through previously made pages, there seemed to be three types of pages where I used circles. The first group were all inspired and based upon sketches and page lifts. There were a decent number of those. Another group of pages were obviously inspired by the paper itself, where it had a strong circular motif. The last group, and there were decidedly fewer of these, was story and theme based. Let’s take a look at the last group:

This is one of my more recent pages, where the subject matter–my son’s desire to make art like Jackson Pollack– inspired the use of circles and art inspired pieces. After all if you’re going to make a page that references the master of the paint splatter, shouldn’t you include paint and messy artsy stuff on it?

A little further back in time, we’ve got this page that uses motion to show my son’s reaction to a late arriving birthday present:

Is that? || noexcusescrapbooking.com

This looks like a photo, matted on the blue graph paper, but is actually a window cut into the blue paper, revealing the photo underneath. When you turn the circle you get this:

You know how sometimes you capture a moment perfectly, and want to relive it over and over again? Turning this page into a spinning wheel helped me recapture some of that surprise and excitement. Plus, it was so fun to make.

One last circle inspired page for you:

donut entertainment || noexcusescrapbooking.com

This is a really old page, inspired, of course, by donuts. The title was computer generated, then cut out using circle punches and an exacto knife. Yes, entertainment is cut by hand. The donut itself was cut by tracing a plate, and then cutting that by hand as well. A bit of color stippling to try to make the donut look more dimensional, and some stickles to bring to mind sugar crystals, and the page was done. Ugly, but done. I can’t help but love this page, because it makes me laugh every time I read the journaling.

Do you use circles to communicate a theme or story? Feel free to share your circle enhanced pages!

A few summer sights

A few summer sights

Have you been playing along with the summer photo scavenger hunt? (You can find the original post, with the list here: We’re going on a scavenger hunt!) Don’t forget to share your photos on Flickr in the No Excuse Scrapbooking group.

I haven’t found a lot yet, but I expect to find more, now that I’m no longer chained to my room re-do. (Updates and pictures coming soon!)

My niece had a few fireworks on her birthday cake:

What have you been doing with your summer? I know some of you go back to school soon. I’m so glad we’ve got the rest of August though. I’d hate for this summer to be known in the future as the non-exisitent vacation for my kids. I really didn’t think I’d be spending that much time on changing the craft room around!

Inspiration at the Paint Store

While trying to decide on which color to paint the new craft room, I came across this flyer from Behr:

Behr 2014 color trends

None of these colors were exactly what I was looking for as far as paint goes, but they worked so well together, I knew they’d make a wonderful page.

Once home, I started pulling scraps out of my scrap bin, and dug around in my journaling/pocket page card stash for some coordinating papers. This is the result:

There were a few scraps left over, so they got thrown on a card, along with a stamp from Judikins stamped with Tim Holtz’s Gathered Twigs Distress ink, if I’m remembering correctly.

My craft room is no more:

It looks so small and sad now. It won’t take long to turn it into a lovely little jewel box of a bedroom though.

And my new craft room?

Barren and colorless and cluttered with my husband’s desk and ugly, needs painting file cabinet.

Which color do you like?

If you can’t read the writing on the wall (ha!) the colors are ocean liner, indian ocean, mint majesty, and spring stream. Sorry for the bad lighting, but that’s what the room looks like with no lights on during the day. I wanted to get a good impression of how each of the colors worked with the available light.

My inspiration this time around?

This lovely dining room from Design Crisis:

I love the combination of bold color with neutrals and wood tones. Since that’s mostly what I have to work with, this is a good starting point for me.

If you have your own craft space, what color is it? If you don’t, what color would you paint one if you did?

Anyone have any pictures they want to share? I’d love to see where you all create! Link them up in the comments below!
